Review of Isle of Dogs (2018) by Michael C — 22 Jan 2019
The 2019 Academy Award nominations were announced the day before I posted this review. Out of all the nominees, I would like to see this movie take the prize despite the fact that it is not perfect, but I think it is safe to say that "Incredibles 2" will take the Oscar though "Isle of Dogs" is a much better movie.
Wes Anderson's second stop montion animated movie is a dramatic improvement over the extremely dull "The Fantastic Mr. Fox". It has a much better story with a well written script and some very compelling and interesting characters.
The voice cast does a terrific job in my opinion and the movie is beautifully animated. In fact, much better than "The Fantastic Mr. Fox". However the movie is not without its problems. The captioning is very small, so small in fact that I had to sit close to the television in order to be able to read it.
Also, I had to pause the DVD I was watching in order to read most of the captions because they are on screen for a very short time. Also, I had trouble believing that Atari (That name brings back memories.
) can survive for as long as he did with a piece of metal lodges in his skull. That being said I think "Isle of Dogs" works very well and I am keeping my fingers crossed it wins the big prize.
