Review of Irreversible (2002) by Ricardo R — 24 Feb 2011
I was speechless throughout the whole movie, and the cat definitely got my tongue by the end. I honestly don't know how to feel about this movie; a part of me loved it, a part of me hated it. A part of me loved it because it broke the rules and it worked.
Simply by starting "in reverse," opening with the credits and going backwards. Even though the viewer knows what ends up happening to the characters from the beginning, it doesn't spoil it, in fact it magically makes it better.
The visual effects are splendid as well as the dialogue. I love the bed scene when they wake up and she tells him about a dream in a tunnel and he says, "I can't feel my arm," that would have been good foreshadowing if it had not been made backwards.
A part of me hated it because even though the cinematography is different, those circling and upside down shots can get a little annoying. The story is really harsh, and even though I have seen more brutal films, this one really gets to your senses because of the way it is made.
I strongly caution you on this one before watching it, and like I've mentioned before on other reviews of French films, you have to be open-minded in order to have a good time and fully appreciate it.
Irreversible is one of those movies that impact your life and change the way you look at it (life).
