Irreversible is indeed supremely violent -- and gratuitous, as well. But its violence isn't gratuitous, it's simply overbearing; and it's exactly such because of its characters' deeply disturbing experiences, which cinematically provoke said violence.
It's true excess is in Noé's direction, which is simultaneously admirably renegade and nauseatingly ostentatious. And ultimately, it's his direction that spoiled the otherwise intriguingly angry show for me.
