Review of Irreversible (2002) by Juste F — 14 Sep 2012
In France, on one horrendous night, Marcus' (Vincent Cassel) girlfriend Alex (Monica Bellucci) was brutally attacked and left for dead. Well it was more than just an attack, but you get the idea. He goes on a manhunt for the man responsible, which leads him into the most depraved areas of France as he seeks his revenge.
When you have a movie that over 200 people walked out of, you know you have to see it. And it didn't disappoint. The film was shot in reverse, starting with the closing credits, and the scenes take place out of order - the final scene in the film is actually the first, and it shoots everything backwards so we get the end story before the beginning, which I found ingenious. Plus the first thirty minutes of the film there's a background noise that's almost inaudible, but causes nausea, sickness and vertigo in humans, which I felt when I saw the film but didn't know why until I looked it up. But it really sets the mood for this extremely dark, atmospheric cinematic masterpiece that's truly not for the faint of heart.
