Review of Irreversible (2002) by Christopher P — 04 Sep 2009
I can appreciate gratuitous sex and violence just as much as the next guy, but the reason I'm writing this review is because this film is playing at being something more and, in my estimation, failing.
It's received so many glowing accolades from film festivals and critics......but why? It's basically a shock film; nothing more, nothing less. It's a nine-minute rape scene framed on both ends by two guys beating up a bunch of gay S&M enthusiasts.
Yet it gets all sorts of praise heaped upon it. And I tend to think this says more about the audience's carnivorous appetite for vice, debauchery, and horror than it says about any lofty, high-minded goal the film itself might be reaching for.
