Review of Irrational Man (2015) by Matt B — 16 Jan 2016
Tonally, Irrational Man has no idea if it wants to be a dark drama or a dark comedy or what not. I'd prefer Woody Allen had taken the darker route because the filmmaker really is good at making serious dramas (just watch Crimes and Misdemeanors, Match Point, Interiors, Husbands and Wives, etc.
). Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone are always good, except they have zero chemistry together. And in typical Woody Allen fashion, we're forced to watch a young woman fall for a much older man. It's very tiresome.
As much as I enjoy Woody Allen films, this one is a real disappointment.
