Review of Ironclad (2011) by Neil P — 16 Jul 2011
I've seen some pretty bad "roman/medieval" films over the last year but this one stands out as being genuinely entertaining. It's like a Medieval "300" in terms of the plot with plenty of action and a pretty solid cast.
The violence/gore in this one is top notch and resulted in several gasps and winces. There are some weak points though; the inclusion of the desperate housewife is clearly tacked on and the "romance" feels forced and very one-sided and is even to the detriment of the other character.
Special mention should also go to Paul Giamatti who turns in what must be the first awful performance I've ever seen by the actor and boy does he go off the rails. It's like he's delivering shakespeare on acid and in one scene the rest of the cast seem to look on in sheer horror at his chewing of the scenery.
The film is worth watching for Giamatti alone! The rest of the cast do a very commendable job though. It's also the first film where I have seen pigs used as weapons of mass destruction. Great fun as long as you don't take it too seriously.
