Review of Ironclad (2011) by Bryon V — 25 Aug 2011
Look...ignore the historical aspects...ignore the religious nonsense, which is often hilariously inaccurate, and doesn't make a lot of sense anyways...
Just face it: This movie is "Medieval 300." It's one of the goriest (realistic) movies ever made. This Jonathan English guy must've been yelling things like, "Cut! We need more skull fragments in that shot! Do it over!" and stuff. In addition, it has:
Paul Giamatti hamming it up EXQUISITELY as the villain, King John. OMFG, I wanted to applaud his big speech to Brian Cox. It was WAY over the top, but so damned AWESOME!
Vladimir Kulich playing a Germanic warrior. Yeah, he was "Buliwyf" in THE 13TH WARRIOR...and now he's back playing a Danish Heathen. That rules.
Jason Flemyng is also pretty fun in this, though that's usually true of any movie with him in it.
Don't go in expecting anything "intellectual," or "Oscar-Worthy." If you just want to watch a movie about a castle siege and dudes chopping the $#@! out of each other...rent this movie! ;).
