Review of Ironclad (2011) by Penny B — 02 Feb 2012
Mindless, macho chop 'em up set in 13th century England starring B-movie favourite James Purefoy as a Templar knight who must defend a strategic castle along with Brian Cox and his band of misfit mercenaries against Paul Giamatti's rampaging (and hopelessly hammy) King John.
Sacrificing everything from historical accuracy to basic dignity for the sake of gory action, this is a bonafide guilty pleasure - completely silly and over the top but tons of fun. Director Jonathan English stretches a meagre budget to breaking point, creating a lovable piece of nonsense that will be a beer and pizza night staple for many years to come.
