Review of I.Q. (1994) by Ben L — 27 Dec 2011
Love doesn't follow a logical pattern. That seems to be the theme of this film. The idea of Albert Einstein acting as matchmaker for his niece feels kind of silly. Yet somehow this movie makes it engaging. Perhaps it's all about the actors. This all-star cast shockingly makes the ridiculous plot work well.
The saving grace of any romantic comedy is if you can believe the chemistry between the leads. Tim Robbins is particularly good at playing the lovesick emotions. The problem is that I fail to see why Meg Ryan's character was ever considering marrying her original fiance. As a result you can't feel much surprise when she leaves him.
The best aspect of this movie is Einstein and his brilliant friends trying to meddle in the relationships. There's just something fun about a group of old troublemakers. The problem that threatens to pull the lovebirds apart (which always rears its head in a romantic comedy) arrived a little late in this one, though. As a result you can't follow the path of emotions. Within ten minutes you jump from bliss to hate and back to bliss. I like the movie because it makes me smile, but there are tons of better rom-coms out there.
