Review of Ip Man (2008) by Benjamin D — 29 Aug 2011
The plot is not that of an amazingly astounding martial artist rising above all competition, but instead, how the teacher of the legendary Bruce Lee caused fellow Chinese followers to congregate in order to peacefully reclaim their dignity, along with their lively hoods.
In this film about hand-to-hand combat, the emotion is conveyed not by any of the plentifully enthralling fights, but instead by the powerful underlying plot that does not entirely revolve around the protagonist of Ip Man. Instead, it revolves around the meaning of what a single human being is capable of achieving, no matter how suppressed he is.
It is this type of film which makes me ponder how man is capable of being so self-centered, while others needlessly suffer.
