Review of Ip Man (2008) by G K — 05 Oct 2018
After the Japanese invasion, Ip Man takes a dark turn and becomes something truly riveting in its retelling of a true story. The film's supposed lack of structure in pacing and focus was not a concern to me.
However, it may be unremarkable when it comes to displaying a compelling narrative with meaningful characters (due to the lack of contextual depth), but it is still very enjoyable for its slick camerawork and prominent use of lighting, saturation, and magnificent set design to convey its atmosphere.
Also incredible is the action choreography, the potency of its occasional drama, and the delivery of its messages that heighten its few incredibly gratifying fight scenes. All in all, this is an enthralling martial arts movie that is significantly elevated by its character-driven plot and exciting fight scenes accompanied by the film's impeccable cinematography, sweeping score, excellent production design, and amazing choreography.
