Review of Invictus (2009) by Jasen L — 01 Sep 2011
Maybe I shouldn't have wikipedia'd the events of this movie before watching it.
So this is the "true" story of the 1995 Rugby World Cup and how Nelson Mandela and the Captain of the S.A. Rugby team François Pienaar came together to try and unite a nation in the wake of Apartheid. At no point during this movie did I believe I was watching a nation in the wake of Apartheid. The tension, anger, fear and hope of the time are never established in this film and what could have been a great movie becomes a cookie cutter sports movie like " Remember the Titan, We are Marshal or Friday Night Lights... all great movies, all done before. Morgan Freeman does a spot on Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon looks like he could play Rugby. There is a lot left out in the telling of the events of this story but you can google it yourself.
