Review of Invictus (2009) by Ajay N — 24 Aug 2011
Not focusing on South Africas political and social challanges directly but including it lightly into a story built around the south african rugby team, is an interesting idea. It works well for the most part, using the Rugby in much the same way that, according to the film, Mandela did, for a wider story.
The end seems to loose this as the final is stretched out as it turns into a sporting achievment movie.
Freeman is brilliant, amazing as Mandela ... and the sense that the world was given a gift when South Africa was lucky enough to emerge from its darkness with this man is captured.
There will probably be bettter Mandela movies that celebrate the man, I dont see there being a better performance in the lead role.
Damon is strong as Francois Pienaar as well. The two men really make this movie.
