Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Ross B — 28 Sep 2012
Phillip Kaufman directs this impressive remake of the classic sci-fi thriller and adds more terror and better special effects. Donald Sutherland stars as Matthew Bennell, a man who works for the Department of Health in San Fransisco.
When one of his trusted colleagues and dearest friends Elizabeth (Brooke Adams) begins to get worried that her boyfriend does not seem to be her boyfriend, the two begin to discover that there is something strange going on around the city.
They along with their friends Jack and Nancy Bellcec (Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright) as well as David Kibner (Leornard Nimoy) try to find out what is going on before it is too late. The film builds on the psychological terror of the original but takes it out of its Cold War paranoia feel from the '50s and updates it.
The special effects are obviously more improved and add a lot to the film, especially when you see the pods at work. The sound effects are also terrifying especially the warning scream that they let out.
The problem is that the run time is a bit long at almost 2 hours, unlike the original's hour and a half. All in all, it is one of the better remakes ever made and expands on what is a classic of the genre.
