Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Bailey H — 06 Jul 2015
One of the great things about this film is that it isn't overloaded in songs. Usually in musicals there are about 5 songs that could be cut, but in this one, there are maybe only 1 or 2 songs that get a tad boring.
Another plus to this film is that the music is very interesting and has some very funny, smart lyrics that even people who aren't musical fans might enjoy. The cast was great. Meryl shines on as always, Emily Blunt shocks us with her singing voice, and all of the other characters had wonderful pipes as well.
THE DOWNSIDE, this musical is unlike many other musicals. It is very specifically for entertainment only, so don't watch it expecting to take some big message away from it like you did from "The Sound of Music" or "Hairspray".
There are many unrealistic things such as magic, giants, and fantasy stuff. So also, don't expect a realistic musical. It is long, too, very long, so be prepared for an odd plot twist, and an extra 20 minutes that maybe weren't necessary.
