Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Monica P — 01 Jul 2015
I honestly went into this movie extremely excited. I have loved Into the Woods for longer than I could understand the dark themes underlying it. I watched this on a trip to New York and I ended up regretting it big time.
My sentiment is that I wasted 2 hours and 5 minutes, not that I was going to do anything worthwhile in that time but I digress. I was so disappointed with the way this came out. I feel that all the things I loved about the play were violently murdered trying to get the green light for Hollywood.
All the dark themes and emotional turmoil that I honestly loved and found super refreshing was scattered to the wind. I liked that the point of the play was there's no such thing as "happily ever after" so was quite upset to see that Rapunzel's story was completely altered.
The casting was alright, and the singing was meh but Academy Award nomination or not I did not like Meryl Streep in this film. Also slightly disappointed to see Johnny Depp was the wolf because I knew how small the wolf's role was.
I just wish Disney had had the courage to produce a movie that wasn't strictly for children. Into the Woods is a great story about disappointment, adultery, being careful what you wish for, and has some emotional turmoil that is very compelling and strikes a cord with the audience.
Some people complained about all the singing I mean I guess I'm just a musical person whereas some others are not. I can't describe how upset I become when I try to compare the play to the movie, especially knowing this movie could have been so much more.
