Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Valerie P — 19 Mar 2012
This film was very effective. The true story of Christopher McCandless, a college graduate who is compelled to leave society behind and find truth in the isolated wilderness of Alaska, is a story worth telling.
Christopher chose to act upon a feeling that I believe many of us experience at some point in life (often when we are young and full of the passions that our studies have inspired); That feeling that we're missing out on the real meaning of life. That mankind has stifled the beauty and simplicity of the planet. You have to admire Christopher's bravery, even as you can see his fatal mistakes emerging as the film progresses.
I am really glad that they chose to intersperse the happy scenes of Christopher's earlier journies with the tragic conclusion of his tale. It prevented the film from taking you on a slow spiral downward, and instead allowed the inspiration of his passion to lift your spirits, even when you knew the end was near.
I recommend this film whole-heartedly.
I don't believe that Christopher McCandless' story is one that should ever be forgotten.
