Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Anne-Julie L — 23 Jul 2012
My first suggestion? Watch the trailer for this movie. The entire story is right there. If that's not enough for you, then go see it.
When you do, you will probably be overcome with the romanticized adventure of a young man abandoning his rich, ivy-league life to take on the world as a vagabond. I know I sure did. I wanted to storm out of the theatre and burn all my money and find a cave to live in off of East Hastings. Following the ending movie, I did not feel as inspired. For a few hours, I didn't know why, and then it came to me: I had just been duped into believing that the movie I had just saw depicted an American hero and not an angry brat with too much luck on his side. I went into the theatre wanting to see something inspiring so much that I let myself believe that I had, but I didn't. All this movie is about is a young man angry at his parents, who, based on inspiring views of life from his favourite authors, goes "into the wild" believeing he can survive on sheer passion alone. Which, if you've ever seen "Survivorman" you'll know is not true.
This movie was well acted, and gorgeously shot. Christopher, played very well by Emile Hirsch, does learn his lessons by the end, which is all say about the ending.
