Holy Cow! We got ourselves a big one. False alarm, it's just a disposable found-footage disaster movie. "Into the Storm" plays like a second-rate Syfy movie. It may have good special effects but "Into the Storm" doesn't have much of a plot and characters we actually care about. You would find more suspense in "Sharknado 2". These monster tornadoes make a lot of noise and blow things up but "Into the Storm" is a cheap-looking disaster movie made by the guy who did "Final Destination 5".
The movie is set in Silverton, Oklahoma and we follow a group of storm chasers, a high school vice-principal and his two sons and a couple of thrill-seeking amateurs. Vice-Principal Gary Morris (Richard Armitage, Thorin Oakenshield, from the "Hobbit" movies) wants his two sons, Trey and Donnie (Nathan Kress and Max Deacon) to record messages from the seniors for a time capsule to be opened in 25 years. Meanwhile, storm chasers Allison (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Pete (Matt Walsh) are attempting to film ravaging tornadoes using a heavily armored vehicle.
We also get a couple of thrill-seeking amateurs and... I'm sorry, why should we care? These idiots would be right at home in a "Jackass" movie. Soon, the town of Silverton gets ravaged by deadly tornadoes and the storm chasers predict that the worst is yet to come. Donnie and his possible girlfriend, Kaitlyn (Alycia Debnam-Carey) are trapped beneath a paper mill. To make matters worse, a water pipe breaks and begins to flood the hole in which the two students are trapped. Gary, Trey and Pete's storm team set off to find Donnie but they soon learn that a colossal EF5 tornado is heading towards Silverton.
We're dealing with severe weather alright, an onslaught of forgettable characters. I don't care about all of this destruction, I just wanted these tornadoes to take away some of these characters. Sarah Wayne Callies (from "Prison Break" and "The Walking Dead") gives an actual performance as the meteorologist but most of the other actors have nothing to work with here. There are a bunch of great movies this summer, why waste your time and money on "Into the Storm". Go see "Twister" instead. It wasn't a great summer movie but it had great special effects, a flying cow and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
