Review of Into the Forest (2016) by Abb J — 09 Mar 2017
Into the Forest: Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood star in this broody apocalyptic tale about a couple of sisters trying to survive at their remote house in the Pacific Northwest following a mysterious global power outage.
The film's gut-punching end of civilization realism, where it fades not with a bang, but with a whimper, is thought-provoking, depressing and claustrophobic. Page and Wood deliver solid performances as the sisters trying to help each other cope with their new world, despite some unlikely choices by their characters and an ending that felt a bit out of left field.
This is a film for those who appreciate that a real apocalypse can be way more terrifying than the zombie kind. B+.
