Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Brian S — 10 Apr 2012
Herzog is opposed to the death penalty. We know this because he states it during an interview with a boy on death row in one of the opening scenes. The thing that makes Herzog the amazing filmmaker that he is is that he could have chosen people who are probably or at least possibly innocent to score political points with his latest doc.
But Herzog is not a man interested in scoring. He is a man interested in observing. He chooses two defendants who are clearly guilty of a heinous crime spree. One is on death row. The other, by luck of the draw, has received life in prison.
We meet them, we meet friends, family, the police, members of the victims' families. We even meet a death row prison guard. We observe how the crimes and the aftermath of crime have changed them all.
We see the humanity in each of them. We see humanity in ourselves. Herzog is a genius.
