Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Tibor B — 15 Dec 2012
Another top notch documentary from Werner Herzog, who tones down some of his offbeat usual style here to focus on the various real people affected by a triple homicide case in Texas, 2001. Gripping, and often very moving, accepting there are no easy answers behind both the motives for killing (the convicts are certainly more damaged, infantile and complex than monstrous) and dealing with the knock-on grief.
A particularly interesting interview is with a death row warden, which shows the direct trauma to capital punishment staff who have to repress morals and humanity for numb professionalism.
