Review of Internal Affairs (1990) by Paul P — 03 May 2009
Hadn't seen this film in years and I have to say that it stands up pretty well.
This is probably the most accessible film by Mike Figgis but it has a darkness to it that is really noticeable and effective. The story is pretty straightforward but the characters and the cast are what makes this one standout a little. Garcia does a pretty good job, and the obsessiveness of his character as the story progresses is nicely played. Laurie Metcalfe is also really likeable as his partner. Even Billy Baldwin is good.... That brings us to Gere as Dennis Peck... Cold, calculating and intimidating the guy is excellent at portraying a really nasty piece of work mostly through mannerisms and body language. The fact that Gere will always be known for Pretty Women and An officer and a gentleman really bugs me as this is his best work on screen without doubt.
Nicely shot and well played, this is a pretty decent thriller....
