Review of Interiors (1978) by Byron B — 26 Nov 2008
If a Woody Allen film has questionable dialogue, there will be problems.
For a really long time, this was my favorite movie ever made. Now the one great thing I can say about it are the solid performances, with Mary Beth Hurt leading the way for some intense dramatic situations. Everything else here is not that great, though. Woody Allen seemed to worship Bergman so much he pretty much shamelessly aped his style, a sort of tribute he would do a lot better in Deconstructing Harry. It's too stuffy and too dark and too serious, and it comes off as extremely pretentious now. It's interesting viewing, perhaps, but at the end of the day it's fairly unremarkable cinema.
