Review of Interiors (1978) by Nik B — 29 Apr 2009
I realized long ago that not all of Woody's movies has to be funny, and this IS straight up drama, in the end I couldn't have cared less about any of the participants on-screen. One of Woody's flaws is when he gets caught up in the idea that everyone is, or wants to be an artist.
And here, it's just a full blown attack of people needing to express themselves because they have no other real job to occupy their time. All of the standard cliches are there: sisterly rivalry, daddy's infidelity, mom's insanity, alcoholism, and the terrible affliction of being a writer.
Everything that Woody's has used effectively in other films comes off as trite bitching in this piece. But I could be wrong, it WAS nominated for 5 Oscars.
