Review of Interiors (1978) by Matthew B — 29 Aug 2010
This was a major departure in style for Woody Allen. Like Match Point and September, when he cuts out humor, he severs it completely. The result is a film which manages to produce the same oppressive, emotionally claustrophobic atmosphere as Bergman's Cries and Whispers.
Diane Keaton, Mary Beth Hurt, and Geraldine Page give stunning performances - particularly Page as the psychologically shattered mother. The photography by Gordon Willis is some of the best in any of Allen's films.
