Review of Instant Family (2018) by Karen L — 27 Nov 2018
Contrary to the traitor - this movie is NOT SAFE FOR CHILDREN!!!
The trailer makes it look funny and lighthearted, kind of like Cheaper by the Dozen or something like that. While there are many comic moments in the movie, they are not appropriate for children. Upper teens yes, anything below 14-15, not so much.
That said, I found the movie to be fairly realistic to a surprising degree with respect to situations and portrayals of the foster care process and the many emotions all parties experience. I loved seeing Rose Byrne in less than her usual near anorexic, perfectly styled self. Which is not to say she isn't stylish in this movie, just more human and relatable. The kids were amazing, flawed to perfection as all kids should be. Mark Wahlberg was a great cast as the father.
I would recommend this movie for laugh out loud comedy and for broaching a subject not discussed enough. Tig Notaro, Octavia Spencer and Joan Cusack were all great in their roles as well.
