Review of Inspector Gadget (1999) by J-Man 24 — 27 Jul 2008
Disney follows in the sorry footsteps of George of the Jungle and Mr. Magoo with this slap-in-the-face adaptation of yet another classic cartoon series, with an ultra-embarrassed Matthew Broderick sleepwalking his way as an injured security guard who is resurrected as a cyborg protector of the peace.
What seems like a cheap hoax to trick children's parents out of their hard-earned cash turns into a despicable hoax that is more painful than receiving a poke in the eye. Everett adds a little spark to this embarrassment, which, surprisingly, is worth half a star alone, but the film is desperate to get a laugh out of its audience (which mostly consists of young ones, who might even ask their parents how much time is left in this dreck).
However, there is some light at the end of this long tunnel: the gadgets on Broderick are worthy of notice and there is a neat little duel on the pinnacle of the Brooklyn Bridge, but the creepy thing is that it's Broderick fighting himself! Overall, it is just not worth it.
