Review of Insomnia (2002) by Phillip D — 08 Jul 2015
Insomnia's premise is simple enough and the tortured cop concept isn't really new to film, but Nolan manages to bring his trademark penchant for strong execution to the game, introducing an extremely polished storyline into a movie that is decidedly minimalist in a genre full of sweeping city shots and massive moral dilemmas.
Insomnia is straight cutting and to the point, allowing Pacino to shine in the type of role he's been knocking out of the park for years. Additionally, the ability to effectively utilize Hillary Swank, who is a literal movie killer, is impressive.
Overall, Insomnia represents a sort of natural progression for Nolan, who moves past the intelligent but muddled narrative that was Memento to bring a slickly produced, goal oriented, minimalist and decidedly better acted thriller to the screen.
