Review of Insignificance (1985) by Rodney E — 05 Sep 2012
1: There are few films made in the 1980's - that were also set in the 1980's or otherwise infected with its style - that I really enjoy. They mostly just feel trashy and artificial. This is kind of an awkward blend between the 50's and the 80's, which makes it doubly confusing.
The 80's seem to have tarnished the 50's in a way. It's a very interesting concept though: Einstein, McCarthy, DiMaggio, and Monroe together. I obviously knew the picture would be strange, but I was hoping for a bit more of the magic of Walkabout.
I suppose it's actually a much more straightforward and conventional film, which might be part of the problem. It honestly seemed fairly pointless and idiotic to me. There were very few scenes that manages to capture my attention, much less seem entertaining.
It's basically an incoherent, purportedly high brow mess. I think it's probably the worst Criterion release I've yet to see.
