Review of Insidious (2011) by Thesodomizer — 05 Jul 2018
Upon my first viewing I was mildly surprised. If you're expecting blood, gore or hard violence don't see this movie because it doesn't include of that, however what it does is mess with your head. The more the movie progresses forward the more conspicuously darker it becomes and the loud, eerie music tone makes it even more suspenseful. Something that caught my eye in particular are the jump scares. They're real. Not once in this movie does everything go silent while the suspense builds up and then it turns out it was just a cat or a broom... Every single jump scare is a proper jump scare. The subtle camera movement (besides the musical score) makes Insidious's creepiness increase tenfold. That is what makes this movie operative without using any violence.
As previously mentioned it isn't perfect and that's because of its heavy reliance on sound effects and the musical score. Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson don't exactly give the most straightforward performances and Wan's sense of direction and Whannell writing makes them look like an inferior early 2000s M. Night Shyamalan.
Insidious is not a perfect film but not a lazy one either like a big majority of today's horror.
