Review of Insidious (2011) by Jamjam E — 26 Jan 2014
A stand-out in modern horror movies. This movie isn't heavily reliant on jump scares, which is a good thing, but it does have them almost everywhere. However, two things make this movie great, its music, and camerawork.
Come on, you can't tell me that the music that was blaring through the speakers when the big and red "INSIDIOUS" title screen didn't make you pumped for the movie. The musical cues in this movie are terrific.
Some people say its dated, but it still fits like a glove. The camerawork on the other hand, is marvelous, as well. Although cinematography is the last thing interesting about a modern horror film, even the most casual of film-goers can point out this movie's camerawork, that's how good it is.
The things that this movie lacks is character development and adds few new ideas to the genre. The acting was okay, no one really stood out. However, to this movie's credit, the child actor isn't half bad, a rarity in horror films altogether, not just modern ones.
Child actors can sometimes ruin a good horror movie or even just an idea for one *cough* *cough* The Purge* *cough*. All in all, this movie manages to be a good thrill ride, and probably will be remembered for a while.
