Review of Inside Out (2015) by Nick C — 10 Jul 2017

This is, quite simply, one of the best movies I have ever seen. The sheer concept of it was brilliant, original, and unique, and that's just getting started -- this is a movie that actually manages to outdo its creative concept, a rarity among films.

To begin with, it's an enjoyable, candy-colored adventure that's fun and enjoyable to watch. How they deal with all the intricacies and details of the mind is super interesting in its creativity and complexity.

But they don't just tell a conventional story that happen to have emotions. The story connects back to emotions at the end, is made about emotions, and end revelation perfectly relates to the theme and is unconventional and important. We're told our entire life to always look at the positive, always be happy, and Inside Out brushes all that aside for a much for poignant and important message. The message is that sadness is important. Joy is the focus the entire movie, and we're led to believe that she will end up fixing everything at the end, but it is revealed that sadness has a purpose too. The way they go about this, with emotions as the actual characters, is incredibly creative and smart, and the whole movie comes together perfectly.

This movie gets flack for silly reasons; that the plot is unnecessary, that it is too sad, that certain motivations don't make sense, etcetera, but all of these becomes irrelevant if you have an open mind and an open heart, and see this as it is: a creative and poignant film that has more inspiration and importance than most pictures coming out today. This is one of the best movies ever made, animated or non-animated. The concept is only half of it; the story and characters are married perfectly to the creative set-up, and it makes for one of the most unique filmgoing experiences you will ever have. This is an experience that you won't find in any other film. Anyone who dislikes it should look inside themselves and their cynicism and wonder why they don't pay this masterpiece the respect it deserves.
