Review of Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) by Dave R — 01 Apr 2014
There's something about bringing folk music to life that directors Joel and Ethan Coen excel with, because the music in Inside Llewyn Davis is the best part of this movie. Much like the Coen brothers previous film Oh Brother Where Art Thou, the music holds the story together.
However, this time I was scratching my head at the end of this thing wondering why we even went on this journey in the first place. The title character is a flat out pain in the rear end and pretty annoying.
No one seems to really like the guy and the folks that do, he ends up pissing them off too. The journey is interesting though, taking us to the 60's and a time when folk music was really coming forward.
I guess these guys did it for the art and not for the bucks, but it's hard to eat and sleep on art alone. It's worth seeing if you like the music genre at all, or like the Coen brothers movies.
If not, I'd say skip it.
