Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Jesse C — 04 Jun 2008
As interesting as the last ten minutes are it isn't enough to make up for the films many, many flaws. Laura Dern is a terribly underrated actress and she is very good here, no fault lies with her of with the other actors, no the fault I'm afraid lies with David Lynch.
What I liked about movies like Muholland Dr., Eraserhead, and Blue Velvet is that you have no clue about what was going to happen next. Inland Empire had some very predictable moments which is strange for such a talent like Lynch.
Many scenes feel like someone was trying to rip Lynch off, so there just wasn't enough life or originality to sustain the movie for three hours. Also I was not a fan of the digital camera work, which made the movie look cheap to me.
There are a few good scenes (I really liked the giant Rabbit stuff even though it made no sense), but I expected a lot more from someone like David Lynch.
