Review of Inland Empire (2006) by William B — 08 Jun 2011
This movie rocked like a massive earthquake somewhere else in the world. All my internal media are buzzing with it but I still have no real information about the event (the movie) itself yet. Does the girl crying throughout the film in flashbacks (?) represent the viewer who watches our heroines movies? and thusly us watching this movie? There were so many seeming nods to other David Lynch projects, nuances like ghosts from other films peeking out at me.
Grace Zabriskie's speech about the boy and girl seemed about Dale and Laura from Twin Peaks, or the architypes about them anyway. The bit about the watch reminded me of the ring from TP. The motel rooms reeked of Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, and the whole film swoons with much Lost Highway miasma.
It doesn't seem like he's retreading or out of ideas, it's more like these are the ideas now, after some time has passed. The color red, the blonde women, sexual currency... Have to watch it again one day.
