Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Dan B — 09 Jun 2008
Something of an endurance test. Lynch seems to be stuck in a thematic groove to do with shifting identity that began with Lost Highway, continued through Mulholland Drive and in Inland Empire redefines inaccessible.
Laura Dern's performance is stunning and the digital photography is beautiful, shot with the eye of someone enthusiastically playing with a new toy. However, though it's never exactly dull, I'm old school and like a bit of story that I can understand.
3 hours listening to someone tell your their dreams is heavy going no matter how much of a genius they are. The only thing that's clear when watching Inland Empire, is that this is the work of a director who has given up all pretense of making films for an audience.
