Where to begin? Lynch began this film shooting as he wrote, with no narrative in mind, and I honestly think it shows- in a negative way unfortunately. There's not a lot to reveal any kind of meaning to the scenes and images of which Inland Empire is composed in a first viewing, and not a lot to invite repeat viewings.
This is without a doubt startlingly original, ambitious, uncomfortable and uncompromising, but the whole thing would fall apart without Laura Dern's fascinating and frankly godlike performance.
