Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Teddy D — 22 Aug 2010
David Lynch has eaten himself. Inland Empire is a baffling, horrific and astonishing nightmare and it feels like the ultimate Lynch movie, filled with themes, images, sounds, people ideas and more from past movies (and not just Lynch's).
While what transpires in the film plot-wise makes no sense (the tag-line "A Woman In Trouble" sums it up most coherently), nothing is supposed to make sense. This is ideas and visuals first, meaning and story second.
Watch it only after you've tasted and enjoyed some early Lynch (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr. and Twin Peaks to name a few).
