The movie is based heavily on the Scopes Monkey Trail, but it's not meant to be a historical adaptation. Still, it is evocative of the event and the main characters involved: Clarence Darrow, William Jennings Bryan, and H.
L. Mencken. At times it is slow and outdated, probably because we're watching a fifty year old movie.
