Review of Inherit the Wind (1960) by Scott R — 19 Jan 2015
Not quite the masterpiece I was expecting. The film has some interesting ideas and some well chosen moments (plus a wonderful opening camera shot) but the trial itself isn't much. It doesn't say anything new (although maybe it did at the time) and the case itself is less a trial than a chance for two people to stand on a stage and give speeches at each other.
It's not very dramatic because there's nothing at stake. Plus, I don't much like the guy playing Bryan. I mean Brady. Silly me, mixing those up. He's not nearly charismatic enough and his fake bald patch looks.
..fake. Spencer Tracy is better than I expected as not Darrow. And hey, Darren from Bewitched showed up as not Scopes. It's not a bad film, it's just not a really good one.
