Review of Inglourious Basterds (2009) by Gary R — 16 Jul 2015
"A basterd's work is never done.".
Inglorious Basterds would be just another bloody, ridiculous mess, if it wasn't Quentin Tarantino's bloody ridiculous mess. There's a reason Tarantino is Hollywood's lovechild and Inglorious Basterds is that reason. There's no doubting his talent; it's enormous. Every technical aspect of this movie is off the charts, from dialogue to the look to the ridiculous caricatures, every aspect is well handled by one of the best in the business.
The Basterds are going around France killing every Nazi they find, while a big propaganda film premiere at a French cinema that is owned by a Jew who lost her whole family at the hands of the Nazi's, before escaping her own death. The acting in Inglorious Basterds is phenomenal, especially Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent, but really the whole cast is amazing.
Inglorious Basterds is a violent, fast paced, comedic, revenge film that reeks of the Tarantino touch. I have a sort of love-hate relationship with Tarantino's style and movies, mostly being that I hate that I love them. It's just hard not to appreciate his great talent, even if he could do so much better from a content and themes perspective. Who am I to complain though, he is what he is, and what he is, is one of the only great directors Hollywood has to force feed us.
