Review of Inferno (2016) by Niro S — 12 Oct 2016
Inferno is formulaic to a fault with the "a race against time pushing forward while tracing the memories of the past" being the only engaging layer that the movie has to offer. Robert Langdon is as intriguing as ever but the rest of the cast do not fully realize their potential nor are they characterized properly, most of them are walking plot expositions and a few others are unfortunately obvious plot twist carriers waiting to unfold their true intentions. The deus ex machina ending was to be expected with the marketing highlighting the end of humanity a la biochemical contagion, with the end point being known you are robbed of any form of tension, so, as the memories of Robert Langdon returns, as each plot twist is unveiled, as every character motivation is fulfilled and the tricky puzzles and mazes are solved, we are left with nothing else but to wait for the end credits to arrive.
+ Great to see Tom Hanks back at top form as Robert Langdon.
+ Background score definitely boosts the movie much more tense sequences.
+ First hour of the movie is entertaining and builds up for a grand reveal.
- Last portion of the movie loses steam as soon as the major plot twist is revealed.
- The key characters from different organizations are menacing at first but are entirely too vague to be taken seriously, with no proper stakes and motivation.
- Robert Langdon's memory is a better villain than the actual villains in this movie.
- The flashback sequence and plot progression blends and leaves trails of plot holes everywhere.
