Actually despite reviews it's not a bad film with some occasional great moments, the female lead puts in a strong performance and hanks has some good moments. I enjoyed the chaotic visions orientated start of the movie. Unfortunately I've read the book and I know just how far short the films creaters fell. The book was brave original and shone a light on a very real issue, that and the brilliant ending had me thinking for days afterwards. The film fails to explain the central theme consigning it to the lunatic fringe and plums for a run of the mill and thoughtless ending that fails to do justice to the story.

In addition having actually shot scenes in Florence Venice and Istanbul the locations are whistled though without much fanfare and Dante and the historic aspects become mere footnotes. In return for ruining the ending and giving Dante Italy and turkey short shrift we are given a damp squib of a romance. While I didn't dislike this sideline it doesn't add a great deal, it certainly doesn't sizzle and cannot justify it's place when so much was lost was missing. Having said that if you haven't read the books and want a run of the mill adventure/thriller with some intelligent commentary this is worth a watch, if you did read the book though it's hard to shake the missed opportunity feeling.
