Review of Infernal Affairs II (2003) by Matthew B — 26 Apr 2008
Adds a lot of depth to the first film, especially the relationship between Sam and Wong. Using the 1997 handover as the parallel with the characters development is cleverly done. It really feels like an 'out with the old and in with the new' moment. But it's also very thoughtful, reflective, even nostalgic for the past, while also setting up a sense of uncertainty for the future. Sam welcomes the new era, tragically unaware that it will result in his death.
The cast is excellent and Anthony Wong's reaction to the car bomb is moving and hard to watch without feeling sorry for Wong.
A top class prequel in one of the greatest trilogies ever made.
