Review of Infernal Affairs (2002) by Kyle F — 18 Jul 2008
After seeing this, I really don't understand what Scorcese was trying to accomplish by remaking it. This already does everything that The Departed did, and IA does it in about half the time. Scorcese just directly copied most of the scenes, and added a whole lot more boring exposition. The ending is also more meaningful than the far-fetched "gotcha!" of The Departed. Most importantly of all, there are no Dropkick Murphys.
Still, this is a very good movie, but not quite an extraordinary one. It's so lean that if I hadn't seen The Departed first I probably would have been lost in the beginning. But my interest is piqued enough to want to see the sequels.
