Review of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) by Skye T — 08 Apr 2015
This is my least favourite of the 'Indiana Jones' series... yeah, I like 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' more than this film.
When I was 15 and I saw this movie for the first time, I hated it for about three quarters of it. Reportedly, it was George Lucas' idea - big surprise - to make this movie significantly darker than the previous one and it hurt the movie significantly. It even compromises the integrity of the first film a little bit, since Indy ends up using magic in this prequel when he had clearly stated in 'Raiders' that he didn't believe in magic.
The supporting characters are all pretty obvious stereotypes, from Short Round to all of the Maharaja's subservients. And don't get me started on Willie Scott, one of the most singularly annoying characters and insults to women in all of cinema.
Harrison Ford's natural charisma and the film's climax is its only really redeeming quality; the death-defying action and thrill of that final mine-shaft crash course is legitimately awesome! The rest of the film really needed help from a different crew of writers.
