Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Alex P — 22 Nov 2016
Independence Day: Resurgence is directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich, and it stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman in a science fiction action sequel about an UFO that's even bigger than the last one, and even with alien weapons, earth couldn't beat them against it and have to find a way to do so.
When coming across this, I wasn't really expecting more out of this especially when it's been 20 years since the first one, and Will Smith is not in this movie. From what I got out of it, Independence Day: Resurgence was more of what I expected.
The acting is not that great, although Jeff Goldblum is the only one having fun with this, while it's nice to see Bill Pullman again, albeit in a bit of a more serious role than the first one. The action scenes are fun to watch in a mindless way, and there's some funny parts in it, even though it also has unfunny humor.
The characters are forgettable, and there wasn't more progression on the characters from the first one either. The effects look good, although I wanted to see practical effects from it instead, and not only that, there's a lot of it that felt like a mess going on.
I wish it show a lot more of the alien technology that they use to live in their version of Earth, but it was only towards weapons. The plot is a bit hard to follow as there's a lot of plot lines that doesn't really add much to the film overall.
I had a lot of fun with this film, but it just ended up being a mediocre film that should've just be only be one film.
