Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Matt B — 27 Mar 2017
Will admit this film did have it's flat spots along with poor dialogue and cheesy one liners. but where the film lacks in it's screenplay is more than compensated in it's action sequence and great special effects.
Especially the way some of the scenes where shot where a reminder why Roland is the best at making destruction look so realistic and grabs your attention. More than 20 years after the original I still found myself thinking that was awesome when the Aliens attacked like I was 10 years old again.
I was also impressed by the the space ships and mother ship. I think it would be unfair to judge this movie on the merits of acting and writing and should be reviewed on how cool the movie was. The movie was very cool indeed.
but unlike the original sometimes the flat characters and cheesy lines out wieghed the action which effected the movies believability. Also the absence of Will Smith was sadly felt. These negative elements unfortunately inabled the sequel to match up with how impactful and powerful the first one was.
The first film was cheesy but it was never flat and the writing was strong which enables the viewer to believe in the threat. which also, I felt the threat level and all is loss feeling u got from the first film, no matter how many times u watch, it was lacking in the sequel.
I never really got the feeling that their was a true rock bottom felt by humanity is resurgence. Be that as it may I enjoyed the film as a nostilogical, cool science fiction movie. The film in my opinion works as long as you try not to compare it to the first and just watch it for entertainment purposes.
I recommend this film to everyone especially now that it's on the movie channels. its something cool to watch since it's no longer in theatres which makes it alot easier to throw out the expectations because you don't have to pay to see it.
I choose not to see it in theatres which was a great choice because I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. the reviews threw me off. but honestly it's not as bad as the critics make it out to be.
it's just simply not as good as the first film but its comparison isn't by a landslide it's just missing a few elements and one great actor which made the original an all time classic. Resergence is a fun ride and you will like it.
it's a shame we might not get to see what happens after the ending which clearly sets the franchise up for a third film which concept sounds like it might be promising. maybe Roland and the studio should go ahead and do what's never be done before which is go on and make a third film after a sequel that was less superior and completely redeem themselves in the third act.
